Kings League Tackles Football Fatigue: 'We'll Regain the Spotlight'

Challenges Facing Spain's Kings League

The Kings League in is currently facing a stagnation in popularity, marked by declining viewership and overall impact. Initially, the league aimed to transform football into an engaging spectacle, achieving some success, but it now appears to be plateauing. According to influencer Ibai Llanos, “It has lost a lot of audience, obviously it has nothing to do with what it was at the beginning.” Most of the content gaining traction on platforms like YouTube and TikTok dates back two years, while Google searches for the Kings League have diminished, with only a few spikes coinciding with major football events like the World Cup.

A Global Perspective

This decline in the Spanish market does not equate to the project's failure. The Kings League has expanded internationally, currently active in seven countries, with its biggest success occurring during the World Cup in Brazil last January. Oriol Querol, general director of the Kings League, stated, “We look at the global audience of the project, and the only thing it has done is grow. 2025 marked our most intense growth period due to the launch of multiple leagues simultaneously.” He emphasized that this is a pivotal moment for the evolution of the Kings League.

Adapting to New Realities

The disparity between diminishing interest in and flourishing global engagement underscores the rapidly changing dynamics of online content. To maintain relevance, Kings League's creators must explore innovative solutions. Gerard Piqué, executive president of Kosmos, suggested potential changes: “In 2027, we are going to have a competition that is amazing. At the national level, we will once again be the center of attention.” This includes keeping games engaging and attracting more high-profile leaders, regardless of their streaming backgrounds.

Capturing Youth Attention

The Kings League aimed to attract younger audiences with its fast-paced, entertaining approach to football. However, as attention spans diminish, so does viewer engagement. Querol noted, “We wanted to create a show similar to a video game, with exciting rules.” While initial interest was gained, sustaining attention throughout the lengthy seasons has proven challenging for both the audience and team presidents, many of whom are also streamers. Piqué mentioned, “The commitment from presidents has diluted over time,” which has impacted participation in weekly events.

Market Shifts

Launched in November 2022, the Kings League initially rode the high viewership wave attributable to the pandemic. However, Spain's market dominance has weakened, with Brazil emerging as a promising contender. Querol identified Brazil as a leading market with rich football traditions and a robust streaming ecosystem primarily rooted in SĂŁo Paulo, indicating that adaptable models and formats tested in 2023 will guide future strategies.

Proposed Changes: Scheduling and Star Power

Anticipated changes include a revised calendar format, potentially reducing the seasons' length and implementing bi-weekly match events to boost engagement. Piqué stated, “Traditional football must invest more. Our goal is to preserve the product. Shorter competitions work better for maintaining interest.” Additionally, while being a streamer was once essential for team participation, moving forward, renowned personalities could also add value to the Kings League without the necessity to stream.

Business Model Evolution

The Kings League's nature as either a competitive or entertainment continues to elicit discussions. As Querol pointed out, “The evolution towards a competition with long-term prestige is essential.” While some participants initially treated it as a show, the shift towards a credible competition is now a priority to maintain engagement with audiences.

Future Expansion and Opportunities

While developments in Spain continue, international growth remains a focus, with the eighth Kings League likely launching in the United States. The league plans to introduce a franchise model, offering a guideline for local companies to implement their version. Querol mentioned that while they will not significantly increase the number of operational countries, local partnerships will be vital to leveraging opportunities in places like Indonesia, a nation with a sizable population and a passion for football and streaming.
