With over 30 years of experience in the sector, Escribano noted an unprecedented surge in demand for defense services. The ongoing war in Ukraine and NATO's commitment to raising military spending—projected to reach 2.1% of GDP in Spain by the end of the year—are key factors driving this demand. Indra is well-positioned to benefit from the 31 Special Modernization Programs (PEM) overseen by the Ministry of Defense, aimed at meeting the defense spending target. To date, the company has secured 16 programs, coordinating efforts among various industry players, and is actively pursuing additional projects.

Indra's strategic direction and capabilities have garnered significant attention from investors, with the company's shares tripling in value this year. Escribano attributed this growth to the company's preparedness to execute modernization plans effectively. “We interpreted the message from Brussels well, and the market has duly recognized our ability to make it a reality,” he stated.

Escribano emphasized the responsibility that comes with the trust placed in Indra. He underlined the importance of being consistent and accountable with the resources entrusted to the company. Recognizing that Spain has been considered two decades behind in defense capabilities, he expressed optimism about closing that gap, citing a talented and motivated young workforce.

Integrating AI into Defense Solutions

Indra is also making strides in incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) within its defense applications through the development of IndraMind. This advanced digital brain employs sophisticated algorithms to analyze data, learn from it, and even anticipate potential threats. Escribano highlighted the initiative's aim to bolster Indra's technological capabilities and ensure digital sovereignty. “We possess the knowledge, source code, and infrastructure in both civil and security sectors to create a European platform, reducing reliance on foreign solutions,” he concluded.
