ToggleThe Rise of Exclusive Private Clubs in Madrid
Madrid has emerged as a vibrant center for private clubs, elevating its status among major European capitals. Andrés Rodríguez, founder and director of Forbes House, expressed how Madrid was historically undervalued compared to cities like Paris and London. He believes that the current economic growth in Spain has played a crucial role in this transformation, stating, “Money attracts money.”
Exploding Private Club Scene
In a recent interview, Rodríguez explored the surge in popularity of private clubs in Madrid. For decades, the city's private club scene was limited to traditional venues, such as Nuevo Club and Puerta de Hierro, catering primarily to a conservative demographic. Meanwhile, Matador Club targeted a more creative audience.
The landscape began to shift in 2025 with the founding of Forbes House, followed by Club Metrópolis this year. Located in one of Madrid's iconic buildings, Metrópolis ranks as the second-most photographed site after the famed Puerta de Alcalá, according to its promoters.
Sandro Silva and Marta Seco, leading figures behind Metrópolis, have over 20 years of success in Madrid's restaurant industry. Their legacy includes an international presence across cities like London and Dubai. They stated that many of their clients urged them to establish this exclusive club even before construction began. Metrópolis boasts numerous dining spaces, a lobster specialty restaurant, and a luxury boutique hotel.
New Club Concepts
Another notable entry is Club Vega, located in the upscale Salamanca district. Opened to much anticipation and backed by Iñigo Onieva, Vega aims to create a community encompassing a diverse range of members, from artists to business executives. Onieva, who studied in London, noted that his experience with private clubs abroad inspired him to bring a similar model to Madrid, believing the city was ready for such a shift.
Rapid Evolution of Madrid
Over recent years, Madrid has undergone a swift transformation. Previously regarded merely as a significant capital, its recent inclusion in international investment rankings has garnered attention. The growth of luxury hotels and major brands vying for locations in the “Golden Mile” reflects this evolution. The influx of Latin American students has also attracted their families, further contributing to the city's appeal.
Club Vega exemplifies this modern Madrid, situated amid luxury boutiques and asset management firms. Incorporating a restaurant, event spaces, and meeting rooms, it presents an environment where members can socialize away from public scrutiny. Onieva's vision of community aims to bring a blend of professionals, young and older alike.
Exclusive Membership Models
Membership in these elite clubs generally costs around €4,000 ($4,500) annually, with additional costs for drinks. However, exclusivity often hinges on a rigorous selection process, requiring recommendations from current members. Rodríguez emphasizes that Forbes House is designed for success, not just wealth, promoting the notion that pursuing connections and personal growth is commendable in Madrid's society.
A Shift in Social Dynamics
The establishment of these private clubs marks a significant shift in Madrid's social dynamics. While traditional bars once represented the city's inclusive leisure landscape, the emergence of exclusive clubs signifies the growing importance of elite social circles. Forbes House maintains an admission committee, Vega has its selection criteria, and Metrópolis saw its memberships sell out prior to opening. These clubs illustrate how access and exclusivity are now critical components of the social fabric in Madrid.
