Nicolas Gabard: A New Face in Menswear Fashion

Nicolas Gabard has established himself as a prominent designer in the menswear industry, counting notable clients such as Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, film director Baz Luhrmann, conceptual artist Philippe Parreno, and fashion designers including Guillaume Henry and Virginie Viard. Alex Turner, the frontman of Arctic Monkeys, once remarked, “People used to stop me in the street for my music. Now, they want to know where my clothes are from.” Gabard's enthusiasm for this anecdote reflects his deep connection to his clients, whom he also views as sources of inspiration.

From Law to Fashion: The Creation of Husbands Paris

Gabard's transition from a lawyer to a fashion figure began in 2012 with the founding of his menswear label, Husbands . The name draws inspiration from John Cassavetes' film Husbands (1970), in which three middle-aged friends seek to reconnect with the joys of life after the loss of a mutual friend. “We're named after our customers. Husbands represent ordinary individuals who value clothing but understand that it isn't everything. What truly matters is living and sharing stories,” Gabard explains.

This philosophy underscores the brand's approach, challenging the notion that fashion is frivolous. “Fashion is just as cultural as food, sports, or literature—different, but not better,” Gabard states. He believes that everyone, regardless of background, should have the right to dream about fashion.

A Unique Background and Vision

Born in Nantes in 1969, Gabard spent 20 years as an intellectual property lawyer before shifting gears to build a clothing brand. He did not come from a fashion-centric background, and his obsession with style often clashed with societal norms in his upbringing. “Loving fashion was seen as extravagant in my ,” he recalls. This passion, however, led him to invest a significant part of his salary in pieces from designers like Jil Sander and Helmut Lang.

Rather than following fleeting trends, Gabard focuses on creating timeless wardrobe essentials. “I want people to look at photos 10 years from now and feel their outfits still look great. This is challenging, especially when haute couture can often indulge in immediate creativity,” he elaborates. His focus is to secure a legacy of classics for future generations.

The Aesthetic of Husbands

Husbands is recognized for its structured suits, wide-lapel jackets, and unique patterns, diverging from minimalism while embracing intentional dressing and quality tailoring. Gabard points out a notable gap in the menswear market, emphasizing that clothing for men rarely embodies the aspirational nature often found in womenswear: “Men's clothing has traditionally lacked the dream factor that is prevalent in women's fashion.”

In the heart of Paris's Opéra district, Gabard's boutique doubles as a gallery and library. “Fashion can be complex; rules still exist even when they're not acknowledged,” he states while referring to clothing choices through history. He encourages men to embrace the idea that fashion is worthy of thoughtful consideration, much like the intellectual pursuits of great thinkers.

Cultural Influences and Inspirations

Gabard incorporates influences from diverse cultural references such as Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes, arguing that fashion transcends superficiality. Figures like Lou Reed, David Bowie, and Serge Gainsbourg inspire the brand, with unique pieces like the Gainsbourg striped shirt emerging from detailed historical research and collaboration with manufacturers.

Films like The Italian and Blowup also play a significant role in shaping Husbands' aesthetic. “We like to be a bit snobbish,” Gabard admits with a grin, hinting at the exclusivity that the brand embodies.

Future Aspirations and Challenges

As Husbands prepares to relocate to Le Marais, a more international shopping district in , Gabard aims to attract a diverse clientele, from businessmen to fashion icons like Emmanuelle Alt and Jenna Lyons. Although Husbands primarily focuses on menswear, a growing number of female clients have started exploring the collection, favoring the authoritative look that tailored pieces can provide.

In its nearly 15 years, the brand pivoted towards made-to-measure clothing, recently reintroducing ready-to-wear items. Gabard aims to provide high-quality garments at more accessible prices compared to traditional luxury brands, with suits starting at around $1,700 and shirts ranging from $300 to $700.

Looking ahead, Gabard envisions expanding Husbands to markets in the United States and while hoping to eventually detach his personal image from the brand. With a mission to reshape menswear and foster a greater appreciation for style, he continues to leave a mark on the fashion landscape.
