Alan Faena Aims to Revitalize New York's Nightlife

Alan Faena envisions a resurgence of New York as the city that never sleeps. In light of post-pandemic trends where many locals dine early and retire to bed, Faena seeks to revitalize the West Chelsea area with a dramatic and maximalist hotel project. Emphasizing entertainment, the development will feature a speakeasy and a variety theater, intended to evoke the city's dynamic spirit.

From Buenos Aires to New York: Faena's Journey

Faena, 62, is recognized for his transformative urban projects. His journey began in 2001 during Argentina's economic crisis, when he revitalized Puerto Madero, a dilapidated in Buenos Aires. After selling his fashion label, Via Vai, he took a different route, aiming to build a luxury residential area and attract global talent. He enlisted renowned designer Philippe Starck and architect Norman Foster to realize his vision, dramatically shifting the area into one of Buenos Aires' most coveted neighborhoods.

In 2015, Faena turned his attention to Mid in Miami, another struggling area. Over a decade, he transformed it into the Faena District Miami, a cultural hub renowned for high-profile events during Art Basel. Faena reflects on that journey, stating, “Nobody believed in this project, only us. We've helped elevate Miami, and we're part of the shift in how the city is perceived.”

New Ventures in New York

Set to open in September 2025, Faena's New York hotel will juxtapose luxurious elements like fur and vibrant colors against the backdrop of Manhattan's raw, industrial aesthetic. Located between the High Line and West 18th Street, the hotel will immerse guests in Faena's unique world filled with cosmic themes and artistic symbolism. Each room will surprise visitors with a mysterious card under their pillow nightly.

Artistic Features and Unique Luxury Concept

The hotel's reception area, dubbed a “cathedral” by Faena, will showcase a mural by Diego Gravinese, representing a colossal woman amidst a celestial design. A brightly colored neon mural by Keith Haring will evoke the spirit of 1980s New York, alongside another by Juan Gatti highlighting iconic city monuments.

Faena's interpretation of luxury deviates from conventional definitions. He describes it as a devalued term associated with costly materials. Instead, Faena champions an emotional approach to luxury, focusing on creativity, surprise, and visual artistry through light and color.

Future Aspirations and Cultural Engagement

In an interview, Faena addressed concerns about investment impacts amid the mayoralty of Zohran Mamdani, expressing hope that New York retains its innovative spirit. He emphasizes Faena New York as more than a luxury hotel; it's a cultural project intended to evolve into a vibrant complex of dining and entertainment, akin to the Miami district.

Faena remains committed to risk-taking, guided by intuition rather than finances. His confidence stems from a deep understanding of his pursuits, developed during childhood. He approaches each city meticulously, ensuring a comprehensive understanding before opening a hotel, balancing caution with exploration.
