Childhood is characterized by novelty, which allows children to fully immerse themselves in experiences. When adults engage with familiar routines, their brains often stop recognizing many occurrences as significant. Thus, when they reflect on these times, memories appear compressed.
“Life satisfaction heavily relies on the quality of memories and how we navigate our time,” states Madrid, reinforcing that a fulfilling life doesn't necessitate grand adventures. “Sometimes, it's about thoroughly engaging in an activity,” he further adds.
Whether painting, playing an instrument, teaching, or gardening, deep engagement can profoundly alter one's perception of time, enriching the memory. Madrid emphasizes the importance of cultivating this sense of novelty throughout life. “Even if I've seen a lavender field numerous times, I can still appreciate the scent, texture, or details I may have previously overlooked,” he explains.

This shift might render natural stimuli less appealing, impacting children's experiences of time. Rueda acknowledges that further studies are necessary to confirm these hypotheses regarding overstimulation potentially hindering sustained attention crucial for forming deep memories. Madrid expresses concern that hours spent in front of screens can vanish from memory, as if they never occurred. “We face the risk of not only losing focus but also impoverishing the memories that construct our life narratives,” he cautions.
Experts warn about the implications these changes might hold for the next generation, pondering how memories and attention spans will look for children as they grow older. “We must find ways to safeguard their experiences since information overload could diminish our richness of life,” asserts Madrid.
The solution lies not in abandoning technology but in cultivating opportunities for real connection. “Looking into each other's eyes, conversing without distractions, and observing our environments with curiosity,” Rueda advises.
